rec center

The first place that I began to observe was at the rec IM, I went to the weight room about the same time that I usually go to workout and as I was excersicing, I began to observe how people behave while lifting weights. Its kind of funny to see peoples reactions to certain things, for example if a pretty girl were to wonder in to the weights part of the workout center there would be a sudden serge of people who begin to lift weights, just to try and show off. We all do it but when one is acting that way you generally don't think about what you are doing.
Another thing that I have noticed is the lax atmoshpere, by this I mean it doesn't matter how much or how little one can lift everyone is respectfull to each other. There seems to be a certain sense of admiration for simply trying to improve upon ones self. At the same time however, its kind of easy to spot new people because they seem to be a little clueless as to where everything is, and they usually don't speak to anyone. Another thing thats always interesting is the side conversations, most of which I wont repeat however they are generally pretty funny to listen to. Next time I will go at a different time so that I can observe the changes in the people that go to workout.

Hey Abe,
I see that you are also researching the Rec. I have seen you around there working out, I actually just began back working out myself well at least 3 days a week. Hopefully we'll catch each other and good luck!!!

Abe,
You have a good start here! I like the way you are picking up on who's a regular vs. a new comer. Can you show more details about what each types of people do that show this? Also, say more about the weight room... How is it laid out? Where are you situated there? Dig into the details! Also, I have to discourage you from observing as you work out. You are not as likely to be focused on your observations and need to be writing things down as you observe them--not after the fact. This is an activity that requires careful attention, so you'll need to do it from a more objective vantage point.
